Quick Tips on Managing Your Child's Behaviors
- Tell your child what TO DO instead of what NOT to do.
- Be consistent - always follow through.
- Offer choices (Do not use threats)
- Get down on their level
- Make sure basic needs are met – are they hungry, tired, need to use the bathroom, etc.
- Label the emotion (“You look like you’re feeling angry/sad/frustrated…”)
- Empathize with them (“You’re angry because ______, that would make me feel angry too.”)
- Validate their emotions (“It’s okay to feel angry, but it’s not okay to hit/kick etc.”)
- Avoid shame-oriented redirection (“What’s wrong with you?”)
- Model the use of coping skills – deep breathing, stretching, etc.
